Thank you to everyone who visited our pond stand at the village show on Sunday. Beautiful weather and a big crowd, and a lot of interest in our display.
But we weren’t able to put names to any of the eight ladies in old fashioned costume in our photograph from 1932. So still in the dark there.
But let there be some light: we were able to reveal that the photo was taken on Monday, 11 July 1932 at the grand reopening of the newly restored dovecote, which still then stood by the village pond. And we have discovered a lot more detail about the restoration and the opening ceremony, which seems to have been a very jolly event.
All is revealed in a new page on our website, which includes links to the invitation to villagers to attend, the various speeches – not least, the Vicar giving advice to the newly installed pigeons – and details of some of those present. Could our mystery ladies be amongst them?
Enjoy reading about this moment in time for the 1930’s village of Biddenham.
